Tactical Masts

Written by SMC Group

SMC Group designs and manufactures a wide range of tactical mast systems for defence, security, emergency services and field communications. Tactical masts are engineered to provide reliable elevation for antennas, cameras and other mission-critical equipment in operational environments where durability, portability and rapid deployment are essential.

Some tactical masts are developed specifically for defence and operational communication requirements, supporting dependable performance in demanding environments.

Purpose of Tactical Masts

Tactical masts are used to elevate communication and surveillance equipment so that systems can operate effectively in the field. Elevation improves signal performance, line-of-sight communication and overall system reliability. SMC’s tactical solutions are designed to support HF, VHF and UHF antenna systems used by military units, security teams and emergency responders.

These systems are intended for use in environments where:

  • Rapid deployment is required

  • Equipment must be transported easily

  • Stability under wind load is important

  • Compatibility with antennas, cameras and sensors is essential

Deployment Methods

SMC tactical mast systems are available in different operating formats to suit operational needs.

Winch-Operated Tactical Masts

The Storm Winch Operated Mast Series is designed for field deployment using a mechanical winch system. These masts are constructed from composite materials, providing a balance of strength and reduced weight while remaining suitable for harsh environments. They are built to meet demanding standards and support a range of headloads including antennas, cameras and lighting equipment.

Storm masts are available in configurations ranging from 6 to 18 metres in extended height, depending on the model.

Pneumatic Tactical Masts

SMC manufactures pneumatic telescopic mast systems used in tactical and vehicle-mounted applications. For example, the NL Series features a pneumatic design intended primarily for vehicle installation and supports larger headloads in adverse conditions.

The NY Series is designed for applications requiring high head loads and maximum directional stability, and includes locking collar options for enhanced torsional resistance.

These pneumatic systems are commonly used for:

  • Radio communications

  • Supporting cameras

  • Field strength measurements

  • Meteorological equipment

Lightweight Tactical Options

For applications where portability is a priority, SMC offers lightweight and sectional mast systems suitable for rapid field assembly.

The PFC Lightweight Series is a push-up composite mast system designed for portable applications. It features locking collars and dampening valves to control lowering speed and is supplied with stabilisation accessories for field deployment.

Similarly, the PA2 Sectional Mast Series provide a lightweight aluminium solution designed for rapid deployment and durability in demanding conditions, with configurable options for temporary or permanent installations.

Summary

SMC Group’s tactical mast portfolio covers a broad range of operational requirements, from lightweight portable systems to heavy-duty vehicle-mounted and winch-operated composite masts.

Key design considerations across the tactical range include:

  • Headload capacity

  • Wind resistance

  • Stability under directional load

  • Compatibility with antenna systems

  • Ease of deployment and retraction

  • Suitability for vehicle or field mounting

By offering multiple mast types within the tactical range, SMC enables users to select systems appropriate to their specific operational needs, ensuring performance, durability and flexibility in demanding environments.
